Here you see the first two new buildings of
the new building complex on the MERU/MUM Site in Vlodrop, Netherlands.
The buildings consist of prefab living units, called spaceboxes.
Spaceboxes are a new concept with smart and refreshing outer architectural
appearance.
They are developed for semi-permanent housing
by Holland Composites Industrials B.V. and are specially designed
for students but are also very suitable for other groups.
In Holland over 600 units have been produced for example for three
famous universities like the University of Utrecht, Eindhoven and
Amersfoort.
The students feel very comfortable and like
living in their space boxes very very much.
Spaceboxes provide a very fast solution for temporary or longer
term housing shortages.
Spaceboxes are completely prefabricated.
They
are made of high quality composite materials which results in leightweight
boxes with a characteristic look.
In our case changes to the inside layout have been done by ourselves
and were incooperated by Holland Composites, so that two Spaceboxes
had to be interconnected with each other.
It is possible to construct double or triple room apartments with
individual units. Each room could then be given separate functions.
Specifications:
The room height of each spacebox inside is
8.5 feet,which is about 2,6m.
The room width is 9.25 feet ,which is about 2.82m.
The room length is 20.8 feet ,which is about 6.34 m .
Total length of each building is 90.8 feet which is about 27.70m
Total width is 49.4 feet, which is about 15,07 m
Total height is 30.4 feet, which is about 9.25 m
Our suite consisting of two spaceboxes has
now in total 387,5 sqf.,
which is about 36 sqm.
Cladding and roof systems can finally be fitted
on corridors and stairways in order to achieve enclosed waterproof
access areas.
The individual prefabricated units which can be stacked and configured,
maximum three levels high will suit any plot size.
Prefabricated, hot dipped galvanized steel corridors and stairways
are part of the concept and make the units accessible.
Spaceboxes are being placed on frames, about 70 cm high off the
ground. With these elements it is possible to build the units into
virtually any configuration.
These
spaceboxes are a light cream colour with white windows and white
doors.
The interior can be fitted to suit everybody's requirements. Our
requirements were to give a good comfortable space for a nice living
room, bed room and bathroom. Therefore, as already said, we decided
to connect two spaceboxes together and form one suite.
Every Suite has ist own boiler and heater.
The spaceboxes meet all relevant safety requirements. The materials
have been tested intensively with regards to fire properties. An
official and independent institute concluded that the spaceboxes
meet all fire requirements. Naturally fire alarms and escape routes
are included. The concept is engineered to meet extreme situations,
intensive use and many repositionings. They conform to all building
requirements.
Spaceboxes can be used for many different
purposes and can be appointed to meet everybody’s requirements.
Complete turn-key even with furniture is possible.
Mobility is guaranteed with them.
Low replacement costs
Profitability of semi-permanent projects often depends
on replacement costs. The exploitation of each housing project has
to be interesting. Spaceboxes are specially designed to be cost-effective
throughout their lifetime.
They are lightweight units, which can be easily placed on minimal
foundations (transporatbe concrete plates 6,5 feet by 6.5 feet or
2.00m x 2.00 m, )
Utility services are placed over-ground, through the frames, underneath
the boxes, within insulated canals.
Ground preparation is therefore reduced to an absolute minimum.
They are equipped with plug and play fittings so installation is
very easy and fast. This means, that the transfer of units to other
locations is possible at minimal additional costs.
High level of comfort
As well as their unique look and technical
innovations, they give a high level of comfort to the residents.
The large windows provide high levels of natural light and because
of their characteristic shape don't resemble any other temporary
housing units. You don't feel closed in, like some other container-like
units.
The special sandwich construction gives the
spacebox good humidity and temperature regulation.
Heat and sound insulation are both very good, because of the spacing
between each unit.
